The whole low door sill thing just adds to the top down experience, which is why people like it that way. I thought in my case once the novelty wore off my ratio would be 50/50 but it's more like 90% top down/10% top up. Not to get into that discussion, but Miatas seem most common, Mercedes hardly ever and BMW Z3/Z4 somewhere in the middle. Without the top being down you don't notice the door sill issue as much. I think the other fact is the majority of people that buy convertible sports cars rarely drive them top down, or at least around here they don't. Low door sills probably have gone for good with higher side impact standards, and stylistically higher door sills seem to be accepted by the market. I don't see this happening with the NC or cars like the S2000. One thing I love about the NA/NB is with the top down you feel like you can see for miles behind the car, you can see EVERYTHING and feel like you can just reach back and grab that pole you are trying not to back into. The one thing about newer converts that is really annoying me is the tall rear bustle and top stack. The other thing is a lower door just makes the car more open and enjoyable, you buy a convert to be out in the open and a lower door sill adds to that. The other 'pose' I use a lot is arm on the door, hand on the upper windshield header. I am not very wide and don't have wide shoulders but I find after a while it's nice to put my arm up there just to stretch it out some. I don't know about the NA or NC, but the NB cockpit is narrow, very narrow. What is your reason for consider it important? I'm aware that the arm rest inside the NA/NB is not very large and thus may not support your arm all that well, so have you (long term owners of the Miata) grown accustomed to keeping your arms on the door sill, and now consider it a part of the Miata experience? I also know some people who think it's a sign of a snob/agressive driver, the kind that thinks they own the world (not saying I agree with this, but to each their opinion). I remember a lot of people asking me to take photos during the Geneva car show where I'd be resting my elbow on the door as I was sitting in the car (for size comparisons sake), but why is this so? Why does the average Miata owner consider it so important to be able to rest their arm on the door once the window is down?
